Celebrate Rowing!

Celebrate Rowing!

And suddenly, the day of the final had come... Markus had written us some "crib sheets" with our individually important points to place underneath our pillows - mine was kind of funny, as it only contained the following:

Course: early, shallow, relaxed
and some text, just to make the sheet seem fuller

It got it with the comment "I don't worry about you anyway." Well, okay...

The next day, the most important thing to do was to kill time until we could finally go to the scale at 15:30. Markus did by checking every single adjustment of our boat, we did by sleeping, going for a walk, listening to music, packing our bags thoroughly, unpacking it and re-checking its contents, packing our bags thouroughly... and discussing with the whatsapp group if a raisin bun with peanut butter is a good breakfast or not.

Finally, after weighing, the two hours until the start usually pass by quickly.

Weather was like we had practised in Ratzeburg - some waves and lots of wind... we had a short moment of shock when the dutch crew crashed their boat into the start pontoon, but fortunately nothing broke an we could start on time.

What followed was the shortest 2000m-race of my whole career. We passed by the 500m mark after what felt like three strokes, and when I looked out of the boat for the first time, it was already quite clear that the chinese would not overtake us again (honestly, I was not aware that we made it from rank 5 to rank 3 in the course of the race... if you weren't able to watch it live, you can find the full video here)

The finishing times of the whole day were extremely quick, the winning dutch crew was 9s faster than the existing world record, and also the Australian on the second and ourselves on the third position were below that time. We were followed by China on four, Italy on five and Great Britain on sixth position.
The victory ceremony was particularly impressive - everyone on the grandstand was singing along the dutch anthem. What a moment! What a race!

In the evening, I ate the best pizza (plus Tiramisu :-P) of my whole life, and the rest of the weekend is well filled with strolling around in Amsterdam's centre and watching the finals of the others.

Last but not least: Thanks to everyone of you for crossing your fingers for us, for your support and for watching the races! It's amazing to see how many people are interested in what I'm doing.
At this point, there is something I'd like to know from everyone who read the English section of the blog during the last month - would you be interested to read my blog beyond the world championships? I'm looking forward to your comments!

PS: oh yes, the crib sheets... Leonie's was indeed a bit fuller than mine, and did actually contain contrary instructions to Katrin's. Well, obviously, it worked somehow... Sometimes Markus' ideas are weird.

Vorlauf

Heat

The heat is over, and with a small, but constantly defended head start we have made it directly to final A.

The result of the two heats (official figures here) is:

Heat 1:
GER (06:48)
ITA (06:50)
USA (06:53)
MEX (07:01)
CZE (07:10)

Heat 2:
NED (06:41)
AUS (06:43)
CHN (06:46)
GBR (06:48)

This means that beside us, Italy, the Netherlands and Australia have already qualified for the Final. All the other boats will compete tomorrow in the repecheage. We're quite excited about what will happen there, as it gives us a hint on how far we can trust the times of the heats - so far, we cannot really believe that our heat was entirely slower than the second one. Anyway, though all of us had the feeling that this race was already better than our test race in Ratzeburg, we're confident that we can - and have to - improve further. From my personal feeling, the final will to be tough, and in the end it can be any position between two and six for us...

Some information for tomorrow

Tomorrow, the world championships will finally start for us with the heat:

There will be two heats, the first one at 15:08 with ITA, USA, MEX, CZE and us, and a second one at 15:15 with  GBR, NED, AUS, CHN.
The respective first two of each heat will directly proceede to the final A, all the other boats compete again in the repecheage, through which another two teams qualify for the final.

In case the weather conditions remain as fair as today, the heats will be held as "ordinary races" with the boats competing directly against one another. In case the wind would lead to unfair conditions among the lanes, the heats could also be held in form of "time trials" with the teams rowing after one another on the same lane.

You can follow us live by tracker and audio comment on worldrowing.

Ready, attention, ... departure!

The rest of the team has already departed to Amsterdam on Wednesday morning, so that for the last three days we have only shared the lake with the waves, the sailors and the ducks. Between our rowing sessions, which have recently become shorter and less frequent to support regeneration, I have tried desperately to fight boredom by taking walks along the canal and reading more books than in the whole last year... it's really time to leave.
Nevertheless, it was kind of a surprise to realize yesterday that there are only 4 days left until the heat. Today, we wrapped our boat, put it on the trailer and packed our bags - tomorrow, we're finally going to leave.
The youngsters from my club have sent me a very cute motivation video - thanks a lot to you guys! (Songtext ist "Hello Judith - are you still on training? - do you already hear the starting tone? - ready, attention, beep")

By the way, the semi-finals and finals of the olympic boat classes will be broadcasted on Eurosport. Our final can only be watched on worldrowing.com
