In welche Richtung kippt's denn nun? Katrin und ich sind uns da uneins.. //What direction are we tilting to? Katrin does not share my opinion...

Finding the right rhythm

Our first rowing session this morning ended with four confident smiles - in less than five days, the millipede-style rowing is overcome, and we have developed a common understanding for the structure of the stroke at training speed. Race speed will follow, I'm sure.

Training for the world championships had started with unpleasant news for us: Wiebke and Leonie have "only" made the seventh rank on the under 23 year old world championships, and our training races some weeks ago (in our second training unit as a team) were still a bit slow. Because of that, the responsible coaches of the german rowing federation will wait for our so-called "relation race", the final test race against the clock, to finally decide if they will let us start on the world championships or not. Sometimes, these guys are a riddle to me... in the end, we're a self-paying boat, so letting us start would mean in the worst case a disgrace for the rowing federation at zero financial impact.
Despite we're all quite angry about this withdrawal of confidence we're eager to show that we are a strong team and we are worth being sent to Amsterdam!

Markus has rearranged our positions in the boat - different to our first training weekend, where I was on stroke, it's now Leonie on stroke, then Wiebke, then me, and Katrin in the bow. For me, sitting in the "engine room" of the boat is a completely new experience - before, I was always either on stroke or in the bow.  I still keep forgetting to give the commandos...

The first trainings in a new team are always hard - everyone feels stressed, the boat is rocking and instead of smoothly gripping the water on the attack, you're buying a parking ticket in each stroke...
Markus makes us row the most mind-boggling exercises he can find: rowing with closed eyes, without shoes,  varying stroke rates every couple of minutes, with breaks in the stroke, air strokes... and of course everything in combination! Absolutely exhausting, but obviously efficient...
